How to access the Blood Taking Service at Northampton General Hospital (please click the link for hospital information)

If you are unable to book via the online facility, appointments for both paediatric and adult blood taking can be booked Monday to Friday between 9am and 12:00pm by phoning 01604 544190 or 01604 523303

 All patients must have an appointment to attend the blood taking unit.

A blood test usually involves the phlebotomist taking a blood sample from a blood vessel in your arm. and the usual place for a sample is the inside of the elbow or wrist, where the veins are relatively close to the surface. Blood samples from children are most commonly taken from the back of the hand. The child's hand will be anaesthetised (numbed) with a special cream before the sample is taken.

Test Results

When you attend for a test of any kind you will be told how long you should expect to wait for the results. Typically this will be 3 working days after your test sample was provided. Please bear this in mind and call Rillwood Surgery Reception between 12 noon and 4.00pm on the results telephone line (01604 410007).

Our reception staff are not qualified to comment on the results of any tests or other investigations. If you need advice or help in understanding your results you are advised to make a follow-up telephone appointment with the nurse or doctor.

Please note that we have a strict policy regarding confidentiality and data protection. In this respect we will only give out the result of investigations to the person to whom they relate unless that person has given prior permission for their release or if the patient lacks capacity to engage with the clinician.

Dental emergency and out-of-hours care

If you think you need urgent care, contact your usual dentist as some surgeries offer emergency dental slots and will provide care if clinically necessary. You can also contact NHS 111, who can put you in touch with an urgent dental service.

Eye casualty (Northampton General Hosptial):

To help to keep our patients and staff safe we are changing the way we operate our eye casualty service. The service will no longer operate as a walk-in service. Instead patients will need to contact us by phone before coming to the hospital. This means our team can provide support and medical advice over the phone without patients needing to come to hospital. If you do need to come to the hospital for medical help the team will arrange this with you. Please contact the hospital eye service on 01604 545085 or 01604 634700 ext 8011

• NHS bowel cancer screening is only offered to people aged 55 or over, as this is when you're more likely to get bowel cancer:

  • if you're 55, you'll automatically be invited for a one-off bowel scope screening test, if it's available in your area
  • if you're 60 to 74, you'll automatically be invited to do a home testing kit every 2 years
  • if you're 75 or over, you can ask for a home testing kit every 2 years by calling the free bowel cancer screening helpline on 0800 707 60 60

District Nurses

The District Nurses are no longer based in surgery. The Community District Nurses provide a wide range of care services and nursing assessments in the community to housebound patients who are medically unfit to attend the surgery. Please contact them directly via their hub on tel. 0300 777 0002 which is the Single Point of Access (SPoA) contact point for District Nurse services. 

With prior arrangement with the District Nurse, wound dressings can be changed at week-ends at the Highfield Clinical Care Centre on Cliftonville Road, Northampton (Week-end Times: 10.30am to 12 noon and 1.30pm to 3.30pm).

Health Visitors

Health Visitor works with all age groups; however the majority of clients are families with pre-school children (under 5 years old).

Midwife Antenatal Services

The midwife holds a weekly antenatal clinic by appointment usually on Tuesdays. The midwife provides antenatal care from 8 weeks of pregnancy onwards. The care arrangements will be explained to you when you attend for your first antenatal appointment (1 hour) with the midwife.

Sexual Health and Contraception Services 

The  Northamptonshire Integrated Sexual Health Service  (NISHS) offers a welcoming and confidential service. It offers testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), complex contraception (implants, injections and coils), emergency contraception and HIV outpatient care.

NISHS have particular services available for young people, where it can offer appropriate information and advice to support and develop your ability to make safe and informed choices.

Clinical Pharmacist in General Practice

Our Clinical Pharmacist is a shared resource with three other local GP surgery locations in Northampton and is usually with us every Friday. Patients can routinely book face-to-face medication review appointments with the Pharmacist or request a telephone call for any medicine related queries.

Counselling - Changing Minds (IAPT)

Who is this service for? Anyone aged 17 and half and over with mild to moderate depression and/or an anxiety disorder.

Therapeutic work takes place in GP surgeries and other suitable facilities throughout the county. Occasionally Changing Minds will run workshops and webinars `out of hours' or during the weekend.

From 1 August 2020 the government will be advising that shielding will be paused. In practice this means that from 1 August you can go to work if you cannot work from home, as long as the business is COVID-safe. A return to work letter or certificate from a GP is not necessary when the shielding advice ends on 31 July 2020.

Evidence that you are sick

Your employer can ask you to give them some form of medical evidence to support payment of SSP (statutory sick pay).

It is up to your employer to decide whether you are incapable of work. A medical certificate, now called a 'Statement of Fitness for Work’ (see below) from your doctor is strong evidence that you are sick and would normally be accepted, unless there is evidence to prove otherwise.

You could also provide evidence from someone who is not a medical practitioner, e.g. a dentist. Your employer will decide whether or not this evidence is acceptable. If your employer has any doubts, they may still ask for a medical certificate from your GP.

SHIELDING: Definition of clinically extremely vulnerable groups

People who are defined as clinically extremely vulnerable are at very high risk of severe illness from coronavirus.

Updated shielding advice that is more targeted and will only apply in some of the worst affected areas and only for a limited period of time. Currently, clinically extremely vulnerable people in Tier 4 areas are advised to follow shielding advice. No other areas are currently advised to shield.

In the future, the government will only reintroduce formal shielding advice in the very worst affected local areas and for a limited period of time. Currently, this only applies to those areas in Tier 4.

People with the following conditions are automatically deemed clinically extremely vulnerable:

• solid organ transplant recipients
• people with specific cancers:
• people with cancer who are undergoing active chemotherapy
• people with lung cancer who are undergoing radical radiotherapy
• people with cancers of the blood or bone marrow such as leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma who are at any stage of treatment
• people having immunotherapy or other continuing antibody treatments for cancer
• people having other targeted cancer treatments that can affect the immune system, such as protein kinase inhibitors or PARP inhibitors
• people who have had bone marrow or stem cell transplants in the last 6 months or who are still taking immunosuppression drugs
• people with severe respiratory conditions including all cystic fibrosis, severe asthma and severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
• people with rare diseases that significantly increase the risk of infections (such as severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), homozygous sickle cell disease)
• people on immunosuppression therapies sufficient to significantly increase risk of infection
• problems with your spleen, for example splenectomy (having your spleen removed)
• adults with Down’s syndrome
• adults on dialysis or with chronic kidney disease (stage 5)
• women who are pregnant with significant heart disease, congenital or acquired
• other people who have also been classed as clinically extremely vulnerable, based on clinical judgement and an assessment of their needs. GPs and hospital clinicians have been provided with guidance to support these decisions.

Community transport to medically related appointments, for elderly & disabled people living in the Borough of Northampton or Grange Park and who are unable to use public transport.

The scheme also offers transport to other services such as well-being groups (e.g. illness prevention exercises, support groups, carers groups, specific medical illness groups including Alzheimer's, Dementia, Parkinson's etc)

Drivers volunteer Monday - Friday 8am -5pm.

In addition to an annual membership fee, there is typically a 'per journey' cost. Some schemes accept concessionary bus passes to cover the 'per journey' cost. There is likely to be a minimum charge.

Patient transport services are for individuals who have a medical condition that prevents them from getting to their appointment. East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) will determine patient eligibility for access to this service following a short confidential telephone assessment. Booking line: 0300 300 3434. Private Work / Non-NHS Services

Some services provided are not covered under our contract with the NHS and therefore attract charges. Examples include the following:

• Medicals for pre-employment, sports and driving requirements (HGV, PSV etc.)
• Insurance claim forms
• Letters for taking repeat medication abroad
• Private sick notes
• Vaccination certificates

The fees charged are based on the British Medical Association (BMA) suggested fee scales and our reception staff will be happy to advise you about them as well as checking appointment availability.

Travel Vaccinations

From 1 February 2017 chargeable travel vaccination services will no longer be available at Rillwood Medical Centre. These include Hepatitis B, Rabies, Tuberculosis (TB), Yellow Fever, Meningitis, Japanese encephalitis and tick-borne encephalitis.

However, the following information is offered to our patients as a guide to help determine what (if any), travel vaccinations are required for the areas that they intend to visit when travelling.

Which jabs do I need?

You can find out which vaccinations are necessary or recommended for the areas you'll be visiting on the following websites:

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel most pharmacies that provide this service suggest that you contact them six to eight weeks prior to date of travel to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include identifying which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.

If you're only travelling to countries in northern and central Europe, North America or Australia, you're unlikely to need any vaccinations.

People with immune deficiencies

For some people travelling overseas, vaccination against certain diseases may not be advised. This may be the case if:

• you have a condition that affects your body's immune system, such as HIV or AIDS
• you're receiving treatment that affects your immune system, such as chemotherapy
• you've recently had a bone marrow or organ transplant

Travel vaccines are not usually kept as standard stock items by centres offering travel vaccinations and will usually have to be ordered as required (not less than 6 weeks before your intended date of travel). A second appointment will also be necessary and needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.

Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS and have to be paid for on a private basis.

Private travel vaccinations

You're likely to have to pay for travel vaccinations against:

• hepatitis B when not combined with hepatitis A
• Japanese encephalitis and tick-borne encephalitis
• meningitis vaccines 
• rabies overview
• rabies vaccination
• tuberculosis (TB)
• yellow fever

The following vaccines are available free on the NHS from your GP surgery:

• polio (given as a combined diphtheria/tetanus/polio jab)
• typhoid
• hepatitis A

Yellow fever vaccines are only available from designated centres. Danes Camp Medical Centre is a registered yellow fever centre. Please ask the receptionists for details of charges.

BOOTS Pharmacy

At Boots, our specially-trained travel health pharmacists can provide advice and information on immunisation. You can also use our online quick check tool to find out if malaria prevention medication is recommended for your trip and which vaccinations should be considered.

We recommend speaking to a Boots pharmacist six to eight weeks before you travel. However, even if time is short, we can still help you with options to consider.

NORTHAMPTON ACTIVITY ON REFERRAL FITNESS SCHEME

A Quick Guide for Patients

Activity on Referral is a countrywide fitness scheme which is available to join through your GP, Practice Nurse or Health Visitor. The scheme is based around a reduced rate leisure membership and combined 12 week programme of physical activity.

Who is Eligible?

Activity on Referral is available to people over 16 years of age who are currently inactive. Patients can be referred for a range of reasons including; being overweight/obese, issues with smoking, those suffering from depression, anxiety, mild bone and joint problems, patients with Parkinson, MS, diabetes, asthma, hypertension and back pain.

If you would like to be referred to this activity scheme please email our designated email address (insert your email address) your name, DOB and interest in attending the scheme.

By contacting the practice you are consenting for us to share the following information with Trilogy Gym:

A Healthcare professional from our practice will securely email a completed referral form with your medical details on to Trilogy Leisure.

Trilogy staff will make contact with you within 5 working days.

You will be offered a consultation appointment within 7 days after Trilogy make contact.

You will be able to access a 12 week exercise programme and have access to five leisure centres during the 12 weeks:

Patients will be able to use the fitness facilities at their convenience, with specifically designed exercise programmes to meet their exercise needs. Suitably qualified staff will prepare a bespoke programme of exercise for you after an initial discussion.

Staff will be on hand to support you at any time and will meet on a prearranged dates after 6 weeks to monitor your progress and at 12 weeks/programme completion.

On completion, you will be provided with advice on how to continue with regular physical activity.

Consultation Fee - £20.00 (fee includes consultation meetings with AoR exercise professional at 1, 6 & 12 weeks)

Scheme Cost - £18.99 per month, direct debit for 3 months committed membership

Zero Tolerance Policy

Introduction

Danes Camp & Rillwood Medical Practice Partnership takes it very seriously if a member of staff is treated in an abusive or violent way.

The Practice supports the government’s ‘Zero Tolerance‘ campaign for Health Service Staff. This states that GPs and their staff have a right to care for others without fear of being abused either verbally or physically. To successfully provide these services a mutual respect between all the staff and patients has to be in place.

Our Practice staff aim to be polite, helpful, and sensitive to all patients’ individual needs and circumstances. We would respectfully remind patients that very often staff could be confronted with a multitude of varying and sometimes difficult tasks and situations, all at the same time. The staff understand that ill patients do not always act in a reasonable manner and will take this into consideration when trying to deal with a misunderstanding or complaint.

However, aggressive behaviour, be it abusive language or violence will not be tolerated and may result in the patient being removed from the Practice list and, in extreme cases, the Police being contacted.

In order for the practice to maintain good relations with their patients the practice would like to ask all its patients to read and take note of the occasional types of behaviour that would be found unacceptable:

• Using bad language or swearing at practice staff
• Any physical violence towards any member of the Primary Health Care Team or other patients, such as pushing or shoving
• Verbal abuse towards the staff in any form including verbally insulting the staff
• Racial abuse and sexual harassment will not be tolerated within this practice
• Persistent or unrealistic demands that cause stress to staff will not be accepted. Requests will be met wherever possible and explanations given when they cannot
• Causing damage/stealing from the Practice’s premises, staff or patients
• Obtaining drugs and/or medical services fraudulently
• We ask you to treat your GPs and their staff courteously at all times.

The Legal Position

As a responsible employer, the Practice has a duty as a provider of NHS healthcare to protect the health, safety and welfare of staff under the Health & Safety at Work Act. This includes a risk assessment of violence towards staff and taking steps to mitigate this under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

Abuse of Staff at Work

The NHS acknowledges that there may be instances where abuse, aggression and / or violence forms part of a patient’s illness. In these circumstances, the issue will be discussed with the patient and form part of their care planning.

This information will be recorded in the patient’s medical record and flagged to ensure that members of staff are aware. In addition, where deemed necessary, appropriate support will be put in place, e.g. staff members do not see or deal with the patient alone.

Definition of Physical and Verbal Abuse and Violence:

The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) defines work-related violence as:
“Any incident, in which a person is abused, threatened or assaulted in circumstances relating to their work”.

Violence and aggression towards a person may also be defined as:
“A physical contact with another person which may or may not result in pain or injury. The contact is uninvited and is an attempt to cause harm, injury or to intimidate. Non-physical aggression includes the use of language which causes offence or threatens the safety of a member of staff”.

Physical and verbal abuse includes:

• Unreasonable and / or offensive remarks or behaviour / rude gestures / innuendoes
• Sexual and racial harassment
• Threatening behaviour (with or without a weapon)
• Actual physical assault (whether or not it results in actual injury) includes being pushed or shoved as well as being hit, punched or attacked with a weapon, or being intentionally struck with bodily fluids or excrement.
• Attacks on partners, members of staff or the public
• Discrimination of any kind
• Damage to an employee’s or employer’s property

Removal from the Practice List

The removal of patients from our list is an exceptional and rare event and is a last resort in an impaired patient-practice relationship. We value and respect good patient-doctor relationships based on mutual respect and trust. When trust has irretrievably broken down, the practice will consider all factors before removing a patient from their list, and communicate to them that it is in the patient’s best interest that they should find a new practice. An exception to this is in the case of immediate removal on the grounds of violence e.g. when the Police are involved.

Removing other members of the household

Because of the possible need to visit patients at home, it may be necessary to terminate responsibility for other members of the family or the entire household to ensure the safety of practice staff.

The prospect of visiting patients that are in the residence of a relative who is no longer a patient of the practice, or the risk of being regularly confronted by the removed patient, may make it difficult for the practice to continue to look after the whole family. This is more likely where the removed patient has been violent or displayed threatening behaviour, and keeping the other family members on the practice list could put doctors or their staff at risk.
